Complete WRX STI Performance Build Guide: Clutch, Headers, Exhaust & Suspension

Introduction

The Subaru WRX STI is one of the most beloved performance platforms in the enthusiast community — and for good reason. With a turbocharged EJ257 boxer engine, symmetrical all-wheel drive, and a chassis built for spirited driving, the STI responds exceptionally well to performance modifications. Whether you're building a street machine, a track weapon, or a rally-inspired daily driver, this guide covers the four most impactful upgrade categories: clutch, headers, exhaust, and suspension.

This guide covers the 2013–2021 Subaru WRX/STI platform unless otherwise noted.

1. Clutch Upgrades

Why Upgrade Your STI Clutch?

The factory STI clutch is decent for stock power levels, but as soon as you start adding boost, a tune, or track sessions, it becomes the weak link. Clutch slip under hard acceleration is the first sign you've outgrown the OEM unit.

Clutch Options by Power Level

  • Stage 1 (up to ~350 WHP): Ideal for lightly modified STIs. Offers improved clamping force over stock with a streetable pedal feel. Great for daily drivers who want reliability and a modest power bump.
  • Stage 2 (350–450 WHP): Designed for cars with bolt-on modifications and a tune. Typically uses a higher-friction disc material for better heat resistance.
  • Stage 3+ (450+ WHP): Full-face or multi-puck discs for high-horsepower builds. Expect a stiffer pedal and more aggressive engagement — not ideal for daily driving but essential for serious power.

What to Look for in a WRX STI Clutch Kit

  • Pressure plate clamping force rating
  • Disc material (organic, ceramic, Kevlar, or carbon)
  • Flywheel compatibility (OEM or aftermarket lightweight)
  • Warranty and heat rating

2. Header Upgrades

Equal Length vs. Unequal Length Headers

This is one of the most debated topics in the Subaru community. The stock STI uses an unequal length (UEL) header, which is responsible for the iconic Subaru "burble" or "potato potato" exhaust note. However, UEL headers create uneven exhaust pulses that can limit top-end power.

Equal length (EL) headers balance the exhaust pulses from all four cylinders, resulting in:

  • More top-end horsepower (typically 10–20 WHP gain over UEL)
  • Smoother power delivery
  • A more traditional exhaust note (less burble)
  • Better turbo spool characteristics

If you're chasing maximum power and don't mind losing the signature Subaru sound, an equal length header is the way to go. If you love the burble and want a more streetable setup, a high-quality UEL header is still a solid upgrade over stock.

Header Materials

  • Stainless Steel: Most common, great corrosion resistance, good heat tolerance
  • Inconel: Premium material used in motorsport, extreme heat resistance, lighter weight — but significantly more expensive

3. Exhaust System Upgrades

Cat-Back vs. Turbo-Back Exhaust

For the STI, you have two main exhaust upgrade paths:

  • Cat-Back Exhaust: Replaces everything from the catalytic converter back. Easier to install, emissions-friendly, and provides a noticeable sound and minor power improvement. Best for street-driven cars.
  • Turbo-Back Exhaust: Replaces the entire exhaust system from the turbocharger outlet. Maximum flow and power gains, but typically requires a tune and may not be street-legal in all states.

Downpipe Considerations

The downpipe is one of the most restrictive parts of the stock exhaust. Upgrading to a high-flow catted or catless downpipe can free up significant power, especially on a tuned car. Pair it with a turbo-back system for the best results.

Pipe Diameter

For most street STI builds, a 3-inch diameter exhaust is the sweet spot — enough flow for 400+ WHP without being overly loud or impractical. High-power builds (500+ WHP) may benefit from 3.5-inch systems.

4. Suspension Upgrades

Lowering Springs vs. Coilovers

Suspension is where you'll feel the biggest difference in how your STI handles. The stock suspension is tuned for comfort and all-weather usability — not performance driving.

  • Lowering Springs: Drop-in replacement for stock springs. Lowers ride height 1–1.5 inches, improves handling, and is the most affordable option. Works with stock struts but will wear them faster.
  • Coilovers: Full replacement of springs and struts. Fully adjustable ride height and damping. The best option for track use or anyone who wants precise handling tuning. Higher upfront cost but worth it for serious drivers.

Sway Bars and End Links

Upgrading front and rear sway bars reduces body roll significantly. Pair with adjustable end links for proper geometry. This is one of the best bang-for-buck handling upgrades on the STI.

Lower Control Arms (LCAs)

Aftermarket lower control arms improve camber adjustment range and replace the soft OEM bushings with stiffer polyurethane or spherical bearings. This is especially important for lowered cars or track builds where alignment precision matters.

Final Thoughts

The WRX STI is a platform that rewards thoughtful, staged modifications. Start with the basics — exhaust, intake, and a tune — then work your way up as your goals evolve. Every part you add should work together as a system, not just as individual upgrades.
